The first report on modernization of core systems in Poland

The future of core systems

Polish banks use relatively young banking systems, most of which began to emerge in the 1990s. As a result, Polish customers can count on a number of modern solutions, especially when it comes to the front-end. Still, a large part of core banking systems are based on older designs, which in many cases necessitates modernization. It's a process that currently almost always means migrating to the cloud.

The first report on modernization of core systems in Poland

GFT, in cooperation with the Banking Technology Forum and Microsoft Poland, has created a report on modernizing core systems using cutting-edge IT solutions under the title "The Future of Core Systems. Is it time for the cloud?". One of its main points was to survey Polish banks about the current status of such systems and the challenges of modernization. This is the first report on this topic focused on Polish banks.

Expert opinion

Next-generation core banking systems are mainly based on cloud systems, which provide innovation, scalability, flexibility and efficiency. When it comes to migration, it is possible to use a partial or full service transfer approach. The first option allows for ongoing testing of new solutions so that the strategy can be adjusted if necessary, while the second is mainly used when creating a new digital bank or a digital branch of an existing bank. Some risks and challenges associated with this type of process cannot be overlooked - you can learn more about this in the report compiled by GFT.

I'll admit that while studying the report on the future of core systems, I didn't think that I would be so drawn to the 70 pages of this gripping reading. What I find very valuable is the projection of what may happen around the core banking ecosystem in Poland and the CEE region in the future.

  • 46% of those surveyed admitted that the core system they use is more than 20 years old - this group is dominated by large banks.
  • 55% of the banks have already begun the process of modernizing their core systems, and 9% of the remainder plan to start within the next two years.
  • Only 9% of banks are not currently using cloud technology

Core banking systems are and will continue to be a key component of the bank's infrastructure. The innovation of next-generation core banking systems is based on cloud solutions and microservices-based architecture.
